In the years following that, I got married, had two children and continued to work as a carer in a hospital and then a nursing home. Aged 35 and both children in high school, I ventured into managing a large service of care in the community. Afternoon tea is something of a regular fixture at our retirement village in Bristol, again it is a time to gather and share in the days news or just make some new acquaintances. Life at Avon Valley Care Home is active and engaging, we are a diverse bunch of people, and our activities and engagements reflect this. There really is something for everyone, whether it is trips out around Gloucestershire and Somerset or the local community groups who pass through our doors.
Staff were properly supervised in their work to improve and develop in their work with people who used the service. The staff we spoke with said they felt supported in their work with people who used the service. The manager has an open door policy I can call and talk to them about anything and they listen and help me out”. The people we spoke with told us they had no concerns about the care they received and they would speak to the senior staff if they had any.

People were encouraged to make their views known and the service responded by making changes. The provider/registered manager and senior staff welcomed comments and complaints and saw them as an opportunity to improve the care provided. This inspection was started on Wednesday 18 July 2018 and was announced. We gave the provider 48 hours’ notice of the inspection to ensure that the provider/registered manager and office staff were available. On 19 and 20 July 2018 we made calls to people who use the service and staff to gain their views and experiences. The inspection was carried out by one adult social care inspector.

It was clear to us the provider/registered manager and staff had worked hard to significantly improve the quality and safety of the service provided to people. I just wanted to say a BIG Thank You to you and the carers for all your hard work and support in keeping him at home as long as you were able. He is not an easy man to deal with at the best times, and especially with him having Huntington’s disease. We reviewed the information and data available to us about Avon Lodge Care Home on 8 December 2022. We have not found evidence that we need to reassess the rating at this stage.
When the service was last inspected in March 2014 there were no breaches of the legal requirements identified. At the last inspection the service was rated Requires Improvement. I am writing in response to the miraculous change to the environment in Mrs S’s flat.

Variable feedback was received from people about the continuity of their care. There was a system that monitored reported incidents and accidents. The health and wellness of our residents is very important and we work closely in partnership with local health and wellness professionals to ensure every resident is able to lead a full and enriched life. We welcome visiting professionals such as GPs, chiropodists, opticians and can arrange visits to other professionals if and when it may be required.
Our Chefs ‘follow the food’ and chat with residents about their likes and dislikes, ensuring their food is always well-received. Our gardening club provide the kitchen with many of the herbs needed for the delicious dishes made daily. Much of our food is locally sourced from Bristol and Gloucestershire suppliers or growers in our aim to shop locally and sustainably. We even have suppliers come and visit the home to present their produce so that residents can see the people behind their ingredients. The home is run by a highly experienced team of staff who are selected for their skills, and the home operates a 24-hour service, delivering a high standard of nursing care to suit each resident’s bespoke needs.
